Court to cops: Probe Javed Akhtar complaint against Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut
MUMBAI: A magistrate court in Andheri on Saturday directed the police to conduct an inquiry and submit a report after Bollywood's veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar submitted a complaint against actor Kangana Ranaut alleging that she had made defamatory statements against him to a news channel in the aftermath of actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death. Akhtar's statement was recorded by the court on December 3.
Akhtar was present in court during Saturday's hearing. His lawyer, Niranjan Mundargi, submitted arguments on the plea, after which the court passed the order. "The senior police inspector of Juhu police station is directed to make an inquiry under Section 202 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) and file a report accordingly. The case is adjourned for report of inquiry," the court said. The matter was adjourned to January 16.
Akhtar's plea had said he was shocked when he learnt on July 19, Ranaut had given an interview to television anchor Arnab Goswami of Republic TV and Republic Bharat, damaging his "immaculate reputation by falsely attributing statements to him".
The plea further said during the course of the interview, which lasted approximately 57 minutes, Ranaut proceeded to give her opinions on the circumstances around Rajput's death without appearing to have any direct personal knowledge of these. The plea further said in the same interview she referred to Akhtar as being part of an alleged "suicide gang".
The plea said these false and malicious statements had an adverse effect of lowering his reputation and had maligned his dignity in the eyes of right-thinking members of society, members of the film fraternity, and friends and acquaintances. "At the same time, needlessly dragging the complainant's name into an unconnected, sensitive matter is tantamount to extending veiled threats to the complainant, who is an extremely respectable member of the film fraternity," the plea said.
Akhtar's plea said he had arrived in Mumbai on October 4, 1964, at the age of 19 with Rs 27, two pairs of clothes and a few books.
"The complainant is one of the most senior artistes in the film industry with his successful career spanning over a period of more than 55 years, which in itself is a rare achievement. Apart from this, he was also nominated as a member of Rajya Sabha during the period March 2010 to March 2016," the plea said.
